The one-year programme attempts to impart basic knowledge on key elements of socio-economic development processes, especially in the Ugandan context. These include the interrelationships among major community actors; the processes and power structures that create community governance; the policies and institutions that foster strong, vibrant communities; the relationship between a community’s physical and social infrastructure; and how these elements could be mediated to achieve community development outcomes especially at the local level. Students will be able to choose modules that enable them to pursue specialist study in particular areas, such as social welfare or development services.
The curriculum is delivered through lectures, seminars, fieldwork practice and personal tutoring to ensure that students receive individual guidance and begin to forge an identity as part of the Diploma programme. The purpose is to promote consideration of issues related to social and community mobilization, social development processes, livelihoods and poverty eradication, social justice and empowerment, gender mainstreaming, project and programme management, local economic development, rural development planning, human resource management, social protection and security, local governance, conflict prevention and management in order to promote the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities.
